White Orpington
As well as being one of our favorites, we have also have found them to be one of the most gentle and docile of any breed,
as well as being one of the most popular and best loved of the Heritage breeds, no poultry collection would be complete without them. . They originated in the 1860's in the village of Orpington in Kent, England, as a dual purpose utility breed for both meat & eggs. White Orpington eggs are an off white - light pink colour, hens are average layers laying upwards of 230 eggs per year in their early years, while the cockerels make large white skinned table birds, so they are an excellent choice for many lifestyles and also make gorgeous pets. . |

Our White Orpington line was developed right here at Poultry Valley and form much of the basis of the white Orpington's now found in NZ, although many other back yard breeders have been doing them a great injustice in type, by crossing them with other breeds [such as the Sussex] to gain the more desired white legs.
We have been working on this here and have made good progress, while keeping their breed true to the Orpington type. . Unlike many others whom are cross breeding these beautiful big fluffy birds and selling them on as purebred, we prefer to keep the breed true and pure.! This big soft fluffy docile & gentle breed are highly sought after so it pays to order ahead. . Popularity is always on the rise with this beautiful breed, as they continue to make their mark as both great pets and egg layers alike for those whom delight in owning them.. |
In our experience the white variety of our Orpington's are much faster growing than any of the other colours, and will start to lay earlier as well, many laying right through out the winter too.!
As the White variety is a relatively new colour here in New Zealand, be aware of where you source any stock from if you are wanting good quality stock and wish to keep these gorgeous birds purebred to breed from, for all to enjoy.! |
