Coronation Sussex

The Coronation Sussex has a very stunning, even regal, appearance with a white body and blue/grey tail and wing tips. Their neck is white, striped with blue/grey. The feathers around the neck are called hackle feathers and each one is a soft pigeon blue/grey colour finely edged with white.

The Coronation Sussex is essentially the same as the light, but the black markings are replaced by the pigeon grey/blue colour. This grey/blue colour is described as 'lavender' by poultry breeders and is caused by a gene that dilutes the black colour.

The Sussex, originally from England, is a greatly productive bird; bred in NZ to be an excellent utility dual purpose bird, laying good size eggs that are tinted cream to a lovely brown colouration.  The Coronation Sussex only existed in small numbers and by the end of the second World War, no more Coronation Sussex could be found in its home country.

Our Coronation Sussex have proven to be both excellent layers and top quality show stock to boot. They are a breed that lays upwards of 260 + good size yummy tinted brown eggs in their first years. Of course we are biased, but we think this is a striking breed that are good strong hardy birds with great temperaments.

We keep all three colours of the best known Sussex breeds here, however our Coronation Sussex are one the top ranking lines we have had here to date.

Many are showing our Coronation Sussex stock with terrific results. Sandy, the original owner of Poultry Valley took two of our lovely girls up to an Auckland poultry show in 2011 and both came home with 1st & 2nd prizes.

Plus we have been getting many pleasing updates from our customers, particularly from those that have been showing our Coronation Sussex all over the country, and we are very pleased to hear of the terrific winning results that are being achieved.
Our girls have been winning far & wide from Auckland to Wellington to North Canterbury!

Another excellent dual purposed breed for utility and the back yard, females are excellent layers and very friendly birds to have around with males reaching top weights for the roasting pan at a good young age. . .

W
e give our Coronation Sussex breed 5 stars, proving themselves to be right up there with some of the best layers and show
birds we have owned & developed to date.
