Pullets  /  young Hens

PicturePhoto sent in by Lisa Jackson of her pullets using the chooketeria

A Pullet  is a young female hen under the age of one year old..

As a rule buying our poultry / pullets mean  -

you get quality heritage breeds, not just backyard breeders' birds that are more often than not crossbred birds being sold off on Trade Me as purebred. Generally they are over priced for what you think you are getting, as many people later find out when visiting us. Comparing their purchases with our purebred breeds, it is obvious that they were indeed sold birds with very dubious crossbred backgrounds, often purchased via Trade Me.

Our birds are all reared on quality medicated feeds, with multitudes of clean shavings and lashings of love & care! All are hatched and reared indoors until they are feathered and ready to go outdoors, and to their new homes. This all costs extra to do in many smaller batches, with continually rising feed & electricity costs, plus many other materials, such as shavings, health care.

Our quality breeding birds are all kept in their own separate pens to insure we can supply pullets of high purebred standards.

We have a minimum purchase of at least two pullets or more because chickens are flock animals and require company of their own kind. Also introducing two or more pullets to an existing flock is preferable to prevent one young bird being bullied by the original flock. Please see here for more tips on introducing new birds to existing flocks.

Our Pullets are priced from $50.00 - $60.00 per pullet (young female chicken) from 8 - 11 weeks old, including GST.

The above prices are a guide only for our young growing pullets - however prices maybe subject to sudden change. . .

Our Pullets are usually sold @ approx 9 weeks old  -  we do not often take them through to POL [point of lay] which costs extra to keep (and only if we have the extra pen space available, and it is organised well prior with us to do so first).

Very rarely do we have older birds available for sale that are 'ready to lay' or 'on the lay'  if any were available these would likely incur extra boarding costs for feed & keep on top of our usual prices above.

All our birds are from our own top quality purebred foundation breeding stock, and all include GST in the price per bird.

We are taking orders now for all our purebred pullets  -  pre-order well ahead to avoid lengthy wait times and or missing
out altogether. . . Priced from just $50.00 per bird for purebred quality stock  ~  50% deposit will be required up front to secure
any order and to ensure your place on our waiting list is locked in. .

All our birds are now also sold with a bag of their own feed mix as this is what they are used to eating, any changes to their diet should only be done gradually. Young growing birds should never be fed layers feed products.

We have more info about all our breeds and each breed has an individual page about their specific breed, see our breeds here
where you may also click on each individual breed to take you to another page exclusively about that specific breed for more info
and photos for your viewing pleasure. .

It is a good idea to order ahead to avoid missing out, as our pullets are often very limited, and sell out as fast - a lot are selling out now before we can even hatch or sex them so it is wise to order ahead now by filling out our form here.

When collecting your new birds - please remember to bring suitable carriers to transport your new birds home in - Cat cages are ideal or a dog crate or good strong cardboard boxes with a closing top will suffice and we can cut suitable ventilation holes in any boxes when you arrive.
We can also provide travel boxes as required at an extra cost, but you must order these in advance before your visit, so we have time to make them up before you arrive.
See Here about the Breeds we Keep

We also have available beautiful strong healthy day old chicks..
See here about our chicks.

Our newly hatched chicks are hatched out every week -
these are sold as unsexed @ 1 - 5 days old.

Alternately, you may wish to hatch your own chicks, in which case please see here for our fertile hatching eggs.

Please do not compare the price of our quality purebred birds with the price of commercial Hybrids, of which we do not keep here, we do not recommend putting our heritage breeds in with commercial breeds such as Shavers & or Hylines. .
While the commercial 'red' hens maybe very prolific layers in their first year or two, their laying will then drop dramatically or come to an abrupt stop completely. . they have a much shorter life span out of any poultry and will usually start to develop soft shelled eggs and many other problems. . These hybrids cross bred birds are only bred for commercial purposes and should remain as such.
Quality heritage breeds generally live longer and usually continue to lay for many more years to come. .

All our breeds require separate housing / breeding pens here so that we can ensure that we provide the best quality purebred birds we can for all, both for laying ability, utility - dual purpose as well as the 'looks to boot' for showing as desired. . not excluding the large range of different breeds to choose from all at the one place we have here. .

It costs us much more to rare and supply our quality heritage breeds, much more in fact than it costs for any back yard breeder to rare a few chickens under a broody hen, with no effort or real work at all, and much more than the hybrids commercial layers that can be sexed at hatching to take the boys early (thus meaning much less feed used) we therefore ask that you do not compare our prices to any back yard breeders birds or Shavers you may see listed on Trade Me.

We are a business and as such pay GST to the IRD. . Unlike most other poultry sellers. . Our poultry, poultry accessories, hatching eggs & postage all include GST.

For all considering buying our quality pullets..

Please make the effort  to pick your new birds up yourself for the welfare of your own birds
where possible..

We would like to encourage you to come & pick your pullets up directly yourself, as many do travel from far & wide to do so.
For all wishing to see where we are located to pick up yourself,
please see here for our Address and a Map!
All birds ordered will require payment up front (by bank deposit)
on confirmation of your order (to hold them for you till pick up) to avoid any disappointments and or missing out altogether.

You are welcome to have your birds picked up directly from here on your behalf, by any transport company (by arrangement with me) but you will need to organise this yourself, and keep us informed of all arrangements, including dates & times for expected pick ups please. . We are not in the position to be traveling miles to meet pet carriers, the best we can manage is to meet at our main road corner where the Hoe'O'Tainui Hall is on the corner of Mangawara & Tahuna roads. .
You will need to organise all & provide suitable cages for transportation, or we can make up travel boxes at an extra cost, if requested and paid for prior. .
