Leghorn
Colours: Black, Blue, Splash, Cuckoo (striped)

Leghorns are a light breed that lay a very generous sized white egg, and whom are widely renowned for their laying abilities.
Leghorns are prodigious egg-layers laying up to 300 eggs in their first years, and perhaps one of the best known breeds of chicken the world over which produce the majority of the world's white eggs.
The breed originated in Italy, but most of the other color varieties were developed in Great Britain, America and Denmark.
While not as docile as their larger cousins, we have found Leghorns to be both a delight to watch as well as very productive eggs layers. We have found them to be friendly, inquisitive, great foragers and they funniest characters we have the pleasure of owning! Because of their inquisitive and fairly athletic nature we tend not to recommend leghorns for the urban back yard unless they will be securely penned in a run with an enclosed top. Jumping into the neighbours backyard can have fatal consequences if they have a dog...
We keep these guys in the rarer seen blue colour along with black, splash and the occasional cuckoo.
Our blue line are far more quiet in nature to their brown & white cousins, and have proven themselves to be a great source of entertainment here at Harrisville Heritage, becoming one of our very favorite breeds and promoting themselves as being very inquisitive chatty characters.
An excellent choice if you want great layers with an almost seemingly complete lack of broodiness, and less flighty once mature than most of the other lighter breeds.
Like any blue poultry, when breeding blue birds the resulting chicks do not all hatch out to be blue. No matter what the breed, two blue parents will typically produce 50% blue, 25% black and 25% splash chicks. With the blue leghorn it is not unusual to get the odd cuckoo colour pop out as well from time to time.
