Hatching Eggs
Please Note: Chicken eggs take 21 Days to hatch Please Note: When buying eggs from any blue coloured poultry, please do not expect all resulting chicks to hatch out blue.
The resulting offspring for blue poultry is as follows: Blue x Blue mating's will give you on average - 50% Blue offspring, 25% Black & 25% Splash (very pale blue with splash of darker blue) chicks hatch out. This is just the way all blue poultry genetics work, including the blue laced varieties. |
For all those wanting eggs for hatching your own box of fluffies we are pleased to be able offer limited amounts of our own hatching eggs, from our popular heritage breeds of Poultry. However we need to fill our own incubators first, for our own hatching's, so be sure to check with us first at least a week ahead to avoid disappointments.
We only keep small breeding flocks of each breed - generally 5 hens and a rooster penned in their own individual pens to ensure the chicks are all pure breeds. Because we only keep a small amount of each breed we can only supply up to 1 dozen eggs per breed at a time. Although we keep our flocks separated - on occasion due to natural events beyond our control (high wind knocking over pen fences etc) the odd escapee rooster may fertilize a hen he should not, but this does not happen often. We can package up and post your eggs out if you are unable to collect them yourself - however there is always going to be some risk to eggs in transit, see more below re; risks and shipping options / costs. When dealing with nature no one can absolutely guarantee anything & while we do do our very best to provide this service to our customers, please do not expect 100% of eggs fertile or to hatch out, as there are just too many variables to consider along the way, especially once the eggs leave our careful hands. |
Breeds of eggs available from Harrisville Heritage
Not all breeds available all of the time - please enquire. Egg season typically September - February. Sometimes forces beyond our control may mean there are no available eggs of a given breed for part or even all of a season. Sometimes fertility is not good enough for sales. We don't want to be supplying substandard eggs.
Egg sales are limited to 1 dozen per breed. We do not maintain large enough flocks to be able to supply larger amounts within one week.
Standard Breeds - $3.50 each
Orpingtons - Black, Blue, White, Buff
Araucanas - Lavender and Black (Mixed flock - eggs will hatch either colour)
Barred Plymouth Rock
Sussex - Coronation and Light.

Buying Hatching eggs -
- brings with it No Guarantee that you will hatch out live chicks!
And while we do our very best to supply good viable hatching eggs, we are however dealing with nature to a certain extent, and therefore we offer no refunds or replacements for any eggs from any failed hatchings - as there are just too many variables to consider once any eggs leave us.
We sell & supply many hatching eggs all over the country with excellent results, including posting many out, however there is more risk to eggs when they are posted as eggs were not laid to travel. So all eggs are sent " at buyers risk ".
Hatch Rate has nothing to do with the fertility rate, hatching the eggs once you have them is entirely up to you.
We only sell eggs from breeding flocks that have been showing a greater than 80% fertility rate, but things can change one week to another. Poor weather for example can affect fertility - we do out best but we cant MAKE the chickens get frisky when they don't want to.
An egg that fails to develop does not necessarily mean it was infertile, or not viable at the time it was shipped off to you. There are many circumstances that can cause an egg not to develop, including any hard knocks received during transit. Eggs can be damaged internally by rough handling and extreme temperatures with no damage to the shell. This will not necessarily mean all eggs in the same package will be affected.
Please Note; Buyers' should be aware, 'You are buying eggs' - Not guaranteed chicks!
We would never knowingly provide anyone with eggs from any of our breed/s that are known to have any fertility issues, we are hatching our eggs out here ourselves every week, to keep a good eye on all our birds fertility, with good strong healthy vigorous chicks hatching out as a result!
Our eggs are collected daily and regularly turned until incubation every Wednesday or posting Monday's & Tuesday's only.
We prefer our eggs to be picked up (by arrangement) and ask that you please provide your own eggs trays / cartons when collecting them.
Alternatively you may wish to purchase some of our day old chicks (we have a hatching every week, so have newly hatched chicks available) to save all the hassle of hatching them out yourself, or to pop under a broody hen that has already been sitting for some time.
