Sussex poultry
The Sussex was originally bred to be a dual purpose bird and is one of the most productive breeds of poultry. They lay good size eggs that are generally a cream to light brown colour. Although in some cases, exhibition lines that have been selected more for exhibition qualities rather than egg laying over many generations may produce lower egg numbers, but that is not the case at Poultry Valley. We have good laying lines available with the Buff, Light, Coronation and Speckled varieties.
The Sussex chicken, whatever their feather plumage colour, should be graceful with a long, broad flat back and rectangular build. Their tail should be at a 45 degree angle from their body with eyes that are orange - red in the darker varieties, sporting a medium-sized single, erect comb. Their earlobes should be red and their legs and skin should be white in every colour variety. Cockerels weigh approximately 5kg once fully mature and hens around 3.5kg. |
The Speckled Sussex variety was rarely seen until recently. Light, Buff & Coronation Sussex are the 3 most commonly found varieties in New Zealand. We keep this beautiful breed in four colours, including the Speckled Sussex, which is still reasonably hard to source good genuine stock to breed from. |
